Workshop on Clean Energy and Smart Grids in the Gulf Share Share

Potential and Applications

June 10-11, 2012 at the Masdar Institute of Technology, Abu Dhabi, UAE

This two day workshop with its double focus on smart grids and clean energy was co-organized by École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and Masdar Institute of Technology.

The first day centered on the various aspects of the planning, development and implementation of smart grid. In the morning sessions, past and more recent advances in smart grid technology and current research efforts were presented by several speakers. While this first session had a strong technical focus and was meant to display technical possibilities, the second session was implementation oriented. The session called ‘Challenges in Smart Grid Applications’ highlighted problems with current smart grid experiments and studies and presented approaches to address them. In the afternoon, governance issues related to smart grids were put into the limelight of the discussion. In a first step, the policy making and regulatory aspects of particular relevance for smart grids were laid out. To this end, the changes were clarified through the comparison with current sector models. Subsequently, proposed governance approaches and current research in this domain was presented.

The second day was committed to the subject of clean energy. Speakers from Masdar Institute of Technology, the Dubai Supreme Council, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and PricewaterhouseCoopers contributed. Against the background of the nuclear energy ambitions of numerous Middle Eastern and North African countries and the announced renewable energy targets, the discussion revolved around related implementation and governance challenges.
