Commencing in Fall 2012, the Executive Master on Intelligent Governance of Large Urban Systems will be divided in five modules over the year that will be taught in the following institutions:

  • École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland
  • Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey, USA
  • Sung Kyun Kwan University, Seoul, Korea
  • Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Guadalajara, Mexico
  • Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul Turkey

The main focus will be on the use of intelligent systems such as Information & Communication Technologies (ICTs) for the management of infrastructure systems and on their impacts on performance. In this context, an overview of the available intelligent systems will be provided, benefits and drawbacks of their implementation will be presented and real case studies will be discussed. The infrastructure sectors to be covered in the courses are the following:

  • Transportation
  • Energy
  • Water and sewage
  • Construction
  • Telecommunications
  • Emergency services
  • Citizen services
  • Postal services

Furthermore, throughout the various activities of the program the creation of a network consisting of urban managers, companies operating in the area of intelligent systems and ICT experts will be encouraged.

At the end of the program the students should:

  • Have achieved a competent level of knowledge of the present state of intelligent urban infrastructure systems
  • Understand all aspects of the implementation and governance of such systems
  • Be familiar with the relevant terminology in order to share a communication base with technical experts
  • Be able to support, or object to, with arguments the implementation of intelligent solutions in different cases

The modules of the program will be structured to cover the different infrastructure sectors mentioned above and, more specifically, the following areas covered per sector (examples from urban transportation are used):

  • Overview of the infrastructure sector. E.g. main types of urban transportation: cars, bikes, public transport. Ways to control urban transportation issues: taxation, congestion charging, incentives. Public transport tickets: simple tickets, travel cards, smart cards etc.
  • Infrastructure governance models. E.g. urban transportation governance models (e.g. public, private, mixture). Different actors involved in the management of transportation systems, e.g. maintenance and operations.
  • Intelligent systems in infrastructure. E.g. ICT in transportation systems focusing on urban transportation. Usage of ICT for traffic management and in public transport. Cycle hiring schemes. Impacts on performance.
  • Case studies
