Urban Infrastructure Systems: Intelligent Governance Share Share

In collaboration with the Dubai School of Government on June 19-20 2011 in Dubai

Ras Al Khaimah - EPFL Middle East is currently accepting registrations for its June course on Urban Infrastructure Systems: Intelligent Governance. This course will be delivered in partnership with the Dubai School of Government at their facilities in Dubai.

With the global urban populations expected to reach 69% in 2050 and the number of megacities expected to increase to 29 by 2025, proper and optimized governance of large urban systems is becoming critical.

This phenomenon and urge of intelligent governance of cities, peculiar to both developed and emerging countries, has to develop in an environment where efficiency and sustainability are a growing concern. Smart cities will need to rely on new and unprecedented ways to govern urban systems by embedding intelligence in various infrastructures along with ubiquitous communication technologies among users and citizens.

The 2 day course will address the question of how complex urban systems should be optimally governed thanks to increasingly embedded intelligence into urban infrastructures. Participants will be introduced to the challenges of governance and planning of urban infrastructure systems such as energy, water and transportation systems.

They will learn about the importance and the roles of information and communication technologies in such urban governance and planning. The short course uniquely combines four different approaches, namely a policy and planning approach, a public management approach, an infrastructure development approach and an IT infrastructure approach so as to promote the sustainability of cities thank to the ICTs. The case of Dubai will serve as a practical backdrop of the course.

The topics covered will include

e-Governance of urban systems

Embedded intelligence in infrastructures
