Water desalination has become the method of choice to guarantee drinking water supply in the Gulf countries. For his Master’s thesis Grzegorz Adam Koblanski studied supercritical water desalination plants and compared them with existing technologies: reverse osmosis, multi-stage flash desalination, and related approaches. He investigated ways to integrate additional steps into the process and reuse waste heat to increase the efficiency of the technology, as well as ways to exploit industrial byproducts to help decrease the costs.
His research showed that a higher economic performance and fresh water recovery ratio could be achieved by combining supercritical water desalination with reverse osmosis.
