Pilot Bus Selection for Tertiary Level Control of Voltage Regulation to Increase Voltage Stability Margin

In power systems, it is important to provide sufficient reactive power reserves to protect the system against voltage instabilities. Tertiary voltage regulation is one tool that can be used to ensure that the voltage profile is optimal at certain nodes – pilot buses – that represent entire portions the power network.

For his Master’s thesis, Uzair Javaid developed a methodology, based on a genetic algorithm that he developed, to optimally select which nodes are best suited to serve as pilot buses for tertiary voltage regulation.
